Icosystem awarded Phase II SBIR from ONR
Icosystem Corporation Press Release
Cambridge, MA - 13 April 2005

Icosystem Corporation was selected for award for a Phase II SBIR by the Office of Naval Research (ONR). This award extends the work completed by Icosystem with the support of a Phase I SBIR titled "Agent-based Simulation of Shipboard Manpower & Personnel (M&P) Behaviors" (see Icosystem's press release dated 24 April 2004).

"We are thrilled to have been selected by ONR to continue our work through a Phase II contract" said Eric Bonabeau, Icosystem's founder and Chief Scientific Officer. "Through our Phase I effort we were able to demonstrate the feasiblity of using agent-based modeling (ABM) as a technique to analyze personnel management issues for the Navy. We are grateful that ONR decided to support our continued effort to develop a tool to assist decision makers in the Navy with issues related to manpower and personnel."

"Our Phase I work showed that even a simplified model of the Navy's Manpower & Personnel system is able to capture some interesting dynamics that are not unlike those observed in the real Navy" said Paolo Gaudiano, Icosystem's Chief Technology Officer. "For example, we found that capping personnel can easily lead to cycles of high and low staffing levels, which are also punctuated by periods of high frustration for certain classes of sailors."

The SBIR program encourages transition of SBIR-supported research to further applications within the Navy or for other military and civilian organizations. Gaudiano indicated that Icosystem is planning to pursue such transition opportunities aggressively. "Any corporation that decides to apply our ABM technology to their workforce management problems will benefit from a significant technological base that is being developed through Government support. We believe that any large corporation could realize substantial savings by applying our modeling techniques to help with all aspects of workforce management."

The Phase II SBIR award can support research for up to two years, for a total amount of up to 0,000.
