Icosystem is awarded two contracts from Office of Force Transformation
Icosystem Corporation Press Release
Cambridge, MA - 23 November 2004

Icosystem Corporation was awarded two contracts from the Office of Force Transformation to study problems related to the acquisition and allocation of assets within a net-centric framework.

"The Office of Force Transformation is leading the way in making US forces more effective, agile and adaptive" said Eric Bonabeau, founder and Chief Scientific Offier of Icosystem. "We are proud and excited to have been selected by OFT to explore two important areas for future forces: (1) the definition of a new framework for acquisitions in a highly dynamic and uncertain world, and (2) the design of the information and communications infrastructure for an agile, distributed, network-centric, multi-asset unit."

Paolo Gaudiano, Icosystem's VP of Technology, indicated that the two projects address different but related aspects of net-centric operations. "One project focuses on understanding trade-offs in the design and deployment of networked assets. For instance, consider a sensor network operating in an urban environment to detect moving targets: the robustness and accuracy of the system will depend on physical characteristics of the individual sensors, the number and distribution of senors, and communications between the sensors. In a realistic setting trade-offs must be made between these dimensions, and each trade-off strategy will impact the algorithms that can be used."

"The second project focuses more on acquisition strategies: given a certain set of operational or functional objective for a system of systems (for instance, building a naval fleet), what is the most flexible approach to investing in development that minimizes long-term costs while maximizing the functionality of the fleet in spite of uncertainties in future operational scenarios? For this project we are taking the framework of Real Options and extending it significantly to account for realistic scenarios of the type that are relevant to Defense acquisition."
