Icosystem receives follow-on funding for intelligent testing of distributed system
Icosystem Corporation Press Release
Cambridge, MA - 22 November 2004
Icosystem Corporation was awarded a contract from the Office of Naval Research to extend a project for automated testing of complex control systems. The ONR project involves the application of an intelligent testing tool to identify failure modes of a hydraulic system on a U.S. Navy Destroyer-class ship. Icosystem's technology platform for intelligent testing relies on a proprietary methodology based on the principles of evolutionary computing.
"When testing a control system with any significant degree of complexity, traditional approaches to testing are insufficient as they tend to focus on individual elements of the system but overlook connections between the elements" said Paolo Gaudiano, Icosystem's Vice President of Technology and Business Development. "However, the most catastrophic failures often result from interactions between multiple parts of the system. For instance, in our prior work for ONR we were able to show that it is possible to cripple a shipboard hydraulic system by combining multiple damage points, including some damage points that individually cause only minimal stress to the system."
"Our testing methodology has great potential for application in a number of areas" said Eric Bonabeau, Icosystem's founder and Chief Scientific Officer. "The same methodology can be applied to any system with many elements connected to one another: mechanical and electrical systems, computer networks, utility grids, even legal or regulatory systems."
"Our ability to secure follow-on funding for this work demonstrates the value of our approach to testing. We look forward to continuing our work with ONR and applying our technology to new problem areas."
